So, you've had your clip-in ponytail for a little while now, and it isn't looking as fresh as it was when it first came out of the box. What do you do? Although hair extensions don't need washing as regularly as your natural hair, like with most things, aftercare is key.

It can be intimidating to think about washing a ponytail extension. What if it ruins it? What if it loses its texture or bounce? Lucky for you, here at Stranded, we have some handy tips and tricks to ensure you can get the best results from your extension wash routine.

Why You Should Wash Your Hair Extensions

Washing your extensions now and then is a key part of the aftercare process, which allows you to get the most out of them. It's a great way to cleanse the piece of excess product build-up and restore it to its original shine, keeping it in excellent condition.

How Often Should You Wash Your Ponytail Extension?

This can depend on how much product you use on your hair when wearing a ponytail extension and the events/occasions that you wear it to, but at Stranded, we would recommend washing your ponytail extension every 10-12 washes.

How to Wash Your Synthetic Ponytail Extension

Washing a ponytail extension isn't too different from washing your own hair, and is really quite simple.

  • Use a hair-extension-friendly brush to go through your ponytail extension and work out any knots and tangles.
  • Fill your sink with warm water and wet the extension piece thoroughly.
  • Use a mild shampoo and work this through the ponytail, as you would with your own hair.
  • Rinse the shampoo out completely.

TOP TIP: If the ponytail extension you use is made of human hair, make sure to take time to condition your extension piece after shampooing.

How to Dry Your Synthetic Ponytail Extension

    • Use a clean and dry towel and gently pat them dry. Don't rub them!
    • Use your hair-extension-friendly brush to detangle and smooth the ponytail.
    • Dry them using a hair dryer or allow them to dry naturally, lying flat.

TOP TIP: If you're using a hair dryer to dry your extensions, use the lowest heat setting. If this isn't doable, use a heat protectant spray to keep the extensions safe from any damage.

Products to Use When Washing Your Ponytail Extension

    • A good brush is essential in detangling your extension piece. I'd recommend the Stranded Hair Group Smooth Finish Extension Brush.
    • A gentle shampoo is the best option to avoid any ingredients that may be too abrasive for synthetic fibers. Even baby shampoo could be a good choice!
    • For curlier textured ponytails, a wide-toothed comb could be used to detangle the hair when wet, and protect the style of the extension.
    • Micro-fibre towels can be gentler on hair, human or synthetic. Though completely optional, they can be a great addition to your hair care routine.

It's really very easy, no matter how intimidating it might be. A bit of warm water, a dollop of shampoo, a clean towel, a good brush, and a flat surface. Washing your ponytail extension is just as simple as washing your own natural hair, and possibly quicker!
