In 2021, being a woman isn’t defined by your job, femininity, genitals or relationship status. Instead it’s beautifully nuanced, characterised by how you choose to show up in the world. An ever-evolving identity that changes through the seasons of life, womanhood is wonderfully multifaceted and a word that you can use on your own terms.

Being creative is something that’s deeply interwoven in many women’s lives, whether it’s experimenting with makeup, running your own business or managing your family’s schedule. To us, being creative is a highly-valued skill that’s not just reserved for the ‘creative types’, but for all women who approach problems in a new way and find out-of-the-box solutions to everyday challenges.
As people, we’re constantly influencing those around us, whether we realise it or not. To us, women who are a force for positive change lead by example and ask what they can give the world, not what it can give them. It’s about having the courage to initiate difficult conversations at home, with friends and in the workplace when situations arise that make us feel uncomfortable. It’s becoming an ally to those in need and inspiring others to find courage to speak up when it matters most.
As Chimamanda Ngozi Adichi so eloquently says “Feminism and femininity are not mutually exclusive. It is misogynistic to suggest that they are. Sadly, women have learned to be ashamed and apologetic about pursuits that are seen as traditionally female, such as fashion and makeup”. Whether it’s painting your nails, clipping in yourhair extensions or wearing flirty clothing, wanting to feel feminine doesn’t make you any less assertive, powerful or strong. In fact, spending time on your makeup and hair care can be a way to feel your most confident self, helping you navigate the world on your own terms.
For us, being compassionate is a powerful way to make an impact on the world. We believe that women who show their compassion and vulnerability are strong. It helps us better connect and communicate with others, fostering deeper relationships so we can become better leaders.
Even in 2021, women can still find it hard to be assertive from fear of being labeled as aggressive or difficult. But advocating, negotiating and championing yourself at home and in the workplace can actually reduce conflict and show others how capable you really are. If you’re hoping to improve your assertiveness in the year ahead, start using stronger language (e.g “I think this is a good idea” Vs “this is a good idea”) when communicating and don’t shy away from self-promotion.
