5 stylish ponytails you can create with clip-ins

Proof that you can do ponytails with clip-ins; these ideas open up a world of luxurious hair looks to try. Beginner-friendly and quick, expand your ponytail repertoire today...

1. The classic high ponytail

A favourite with A-listers such as Hailey Bieber, Rhianna and the Kardashian clan, the high ponytail is a classic look. Versatile enough to be worn every day yet special enough for big occasions, this voluminous ponytail feels elegant and chic. What's more, it can save a bad hair day...

To achieve this face-lifting updo, follow our high ponytail how-to below:

Step 1: Brush your natural hair through and pull it into a high ponytail. Secure with a hair tie.

Step 2 (for the comb and velcro wrap ponytail extensions): Slide the comb down into the top of your head, just above the ponytail. Now, wrap the extension around your existing ponytail. Wrap a piece of hair around the base of the ponytail to disguise the fitting.

Step 2 (for the bulldog and drawstring ponytail extensions): Attach the claw clip over your existing ponytail to disguise it. Alternatively, remove the bulldog clip and wrap your natural hair into a bun. Fit the hairpiece over your bun using the drawcord fastenings and pull until you have a tight fit.

Step 3: Use a strong hairspray to hide flyaways and smooth back the hair around your face.

2. The big bouncy ponytail

Say goodbye to flat, limp hair with a big bouncy ponytail clip-in. The updo equivalent of a salon blow dry, this look oozes volume, movement and glamour. A hair accessory that can take you from 'just-rolled-outta-bed' to 'bouncy bombshell' in minutes.

Get a thicker ponytail in four easy steps:

Step 1: Start with dry, freshly washed locks. To create more lift in the final look, we recommend backcombing your hair at the crown.

Step 2: Now, gather your hair into a smooth ponytail that sits just below the crown of your head. Pull out sections around your face and curl to soften the look. Hold your ponytail in place with a hair tie.

Step 3: Using the 20" Bounce Wrap Ponytail, slide the comb down into your hair just above the ponytail. Secure with the velcro fastenings.

Step 4: Wrap a section of hair around the base of the ponytail for a natural finish.

3. The fun flicky ponytail

Put a spring in your step with this fun, flicky ponytail look. Made for swishing all day long, your confidence is bound to shine through with this full-bodied look.

Our Medium Flicky Ponytail clip-in hair extensions are specially cut to create cascading volume from top to bottom. With curved, flicky edges and a natural wave, it's major hair goals.

Step 1: Tie your hair into a high ponytail. Consider pulling out your fringe and other wispy sections to frame your face.

Step 2: Using the built-in claw clip, clip this over your natural ponytail. If your hair is thick, you can remove the clip and use the drawstring attachment for a closer fit. Simply wrap your hair into a bun. Hold the extension over your bun and pull the bungee cord closed.

Step 3: Adjust until you're happy with the final result.

4. The wavy mermaid ponytail

Mermaid hair is taken to new heights with the wavy ponytail. This Instagrammable look is bound to make even Ariel jealous with its perfect, tumbling waves, thick feel and extra-long length.

Ideal for special occasions, it really does make you look and feel extra special. Here's how to create a mermaid-inspired updo with clip-in hair extensions.

Step 1: Draw up your hair into a high ponytail and secure it with a hair tie.

Step 2: Take the Body Wave Ponytail and slide the comb down into the top of your natural ponytail. Now, secure the velcro and wrap a piece of hair around the base to hide the attachment.

Step 3: Add your favourite hair slides, such as pearl-encrusted clips, to make this style even more event-worthy.

5. The sleek, low ponytail

Silky, smooth and oh-so refined; the sleek low ponytail will always have a special place in our hearts. Universally flattering, it suits a multitude of face shapes and hair textures. It's no wonder this look is a go-to for glamorous women like J.Lo, Zendaya and Gwyneth Paltrow.

While the sleek, low pony is achievable with all different styles of hair extensions, we've made it even quicker and easier to pull off with the clip-in Long Straight Ponytail.

Step 1: Brush your hair and create a low ponytail with a middle parting. Fix with a hair tie. If you have thick or textured hair, styling products can help you achieve a smoother effect.

Step 2: Wrap your natural hair into a bun and secure it.

Step 3: Using the Long Straight Ponytail, remove the bulldog clip and place the drawcords over your bun for the closest possible fit. Pull the cord tight and tuck into the hair extension so it is hidden from sight.

Step 4: Mist a fine layer of hairspray over your natural hair for all-day staying power.

6. The simple braided ponytail

Let's do the twist! An on-trend style that keeps hair out of your face on the most blustery days, the braided ponytail is a tasteful (and dare we say, easier) alternative to French braids.

If a classic plait is beyond your hair knowledge, don't worry. This look simply requires you to twist two strands of hair together. Surprisingly simple, we promise.

Step 1: Start by tying your hair into a simple ponytail that sits below your crown. For a more dramatic look, go even higher. Wrap your hair into a bun and tie.

Step 2: Remove the bulldog clip attachment from the Long Straight Ponytail. Place the hair extension over your bun. Pull the drawcords tight for a close, budge-proof fit.

Step 3: Separate your ponytail into two even sections. Gently wrap them around each other until they create a long, rope-like coil. If your twists have bunched up, loosen them slightly. Once you've done this to the full length of hair, secure it at the bottom with a hair tie.

Top tips for using ponytail hair extensions

Now you've got lots of new ideas on how to create ponytails using clip-in hair extensions, here are some top tips:

  • If you've got fine hair, consider backcombing your roots just above where your ponytail will sit. This trick gives the ponytail's comb attachment more texture to grab hold of, creating a secure fit and extra root lift.
  • Gently brush through your ponytail before clipping it in. Try to avoid brushing it through after it's fitted, as this can damage your natural hair and disturb the extensions.
  • If your ponytail could do with a little extra oomph, you can tweak your ponytail using heat styling tools up to 180°C. However, our fibre ponytails can't be completely re-styled.
  • Take your ponytail to the next level by adding plaits, twists and hair accessories to your natural ponytail, before fitting your clip-in. These techniques can add interest and put a tasteful spin on the classic ponytail.

Frequently asked questions:
