How often should you wash your hair

September 15, 2020 3 min read

Washing your hair is essential for keeping it clean, shiny and healthy. But when it comes to how often you should be reaching for the shampoo, things can get complicated.

Do daily washes strip the scalp of its nourishing oils, or is it good to remove the day’s dirt and build-up? How often should youreally wash your hair? Find out below and create a hair wash routine that’s perfect for you with our expert advice based on your hair type.

Do you have fine, medium or thick hair?

Your hair type is a crucial factor in how often you should wash your hair. Up to 80% of us actually misdiagnose our hair type based on how much hair we have and not the individual texture of each strand. For instance, you may have coarse hair but not a lot of it, or thicker hair made up of lots of fine strands.

If you’re unsure of your hair type, it’s easy to determine this at home. Simply take a single strand of hair between your fingertips. If you can feel it you have thicker hair, but if you can’t, you have fine hair. Still unsure? Ask your hairdresser next time you pop in for a trim.

Assess your scalp

The scalp is an extension of our skin and can be the root cause (excuse the pun) of many of our hair problems. As the scalp is constantly changing, shedding and growing, it’s essential that its health is maintained by washing it with the right kind of shampoo.

When the scalp isn’t washed regularly, its follicles can get easily blocked by dead skin and sebum, which can slow down the rate of hair growth and cause flaking and itching. This can be exacerbated if you’re not thoroughly washing out your hair products and shampoo – which often makes it look oilier, too.

If you have a sensitive scalp, it could help to switch to a sulphate-free shampoo to avoid irritation, while those who have flaky skin may benefit from anti-dandruff formulas.

Now you’re more familiar with your hair and scalp type, find tailored advice for your hair washing routine below.

Washing fine hair

Fine hair can quickly look limp, greasy and dull if not washed regularly. But over-washing can stimulate oil production faster, as your scalp works overtime to replenish lost moisture. For best results, try washing your hair three to four times a week with a high quality shampoo. It’s also important to only condition the ends of your locks, so you’re not weighing down your roots.

If you’re washing your hair regularly, try to skip heat styling as much as possible. To prolong wash days, dry shampoo can be used sparingly to revive hair between washes.

Washing medium hair

Consider washing medium hair three times a week to maintain shine, boost growth and rid the scalp of impurities. To boost the health of your hair, pick up a low-PH shampoo or sulphate-free shampoo and keep an eye on the temperature of your water, staying away from scorching-hot showers that can leave hair vulnerable to damage.

 Washing thick hair

If you have coarse hair, you’re more likely to get away with waiting longer between washes. Coarse hair doesn’t look greasy quickly, affording your more flexibility when it comes to washing. However, coarse hair still needs to be washed around twice a week to keep the scalp clean and remove build-up. This hair type is prone to dryness at the ends, so it’s worth investing in a luxurious hair oil or conditioner, to maintain a shiny and healthy hair look.

Your lifestyle

While your hair type is incredibly important to working out how often you should wash your hair, so is your lifestyle. If you live in a city and are exposed to more pollution, you may have to wash your hair more frequently. Or if you workout often, it might be worth adding a mini hair wash into your routine to remove sweat and bacteria – simply rinse the scalp with water, skip the shampoo and move straight onto conditioning the ends. Alternatively, use a cleansing spray to keep your roots fresh until wash day.
